2016 Camp Scholarships
January 18, 2016

It’s been in the works since June of 2015, but I’m making the announcement today. 2016 Game Programming Camp Scholarship from groundh0g on Vimeo. I’m sponsoring two young ladies to attend a game programming camp in North Carolina this summer. If you know any students who qualify and have an interest in games or how they’re made, please make sure this info gets into their hands. – Joe P.S. If you’d like to show your...

Day Twenty Nine
December 7, 2015

My #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code Camps has come to an end. Fanny Pack’s Sprite Fonts tool completely monopolized my time, but I have no regrets. It’s shaping up to become a powerful open source tool for game development. I expect to have a usable version of the tool posted by year’s end. Progress will be slower now that I’ve returned to work. I don’t consider the time spent on Fanny Pack as wasted in the...

Day Thirteen
November 21, 2015

It’s day 13 of my #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code Camps. Fanny Pack’s Sprite Fonts tool has monopolized my time, but I have no regrets. It’s shaping up to become a powerful open source tool for game development. Today should be my last day on this task, though. I need to make some progress on the book while I’m off work. I won’t get an opportunity like this again before the 2016 summer camp. The font...

Day Eight
November 16, 2015

It’s day 8 of my #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code Camps. New week. New goals. Fanny Pack’s Sprite Fonts tool isn’t 100% quite yet, and the weekend’s progress was meager by any measure. I’m giving myself another two days to get Sprite Fonts into a usable state, then the book’s text and example games are back in my crosshairs. I’ve knocked out several bug fixes in recent days, and added extra error handling to make the...

Day Six
November 14, 2015

It’s already day 6 of my #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code Camps? Jeez. Fanny Pack’s Sprite Fonts tool is still occupying the lion’s share of my time. The tool includes 2000+ freeware and OFL fonts for use in your games. Next step is to add support for importing your own truetype fonts. This project has been a real challenge. From the tool to scrape commercial-use-friendly fonts from various vendors, to implementing the indexing and searching of...

Day Two
November 10, 2015

It may seem like a detour, but I can assure you that it’s directly related to my #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code Camps. Game programming requires tools beyond the compiler. I set out to create a suite of cross-platform tools collectively called Fanny Pack. Fanny Pack is a suite of tools that I developed for my game programming students. There are certainly better products out there, but I wanted my students to have access to free...

Day One
November 9, 2015

Thanks to internal bleeding that put me in the hospital, I lost a little less than half my blood over Labor Day weekend. I’ve been working from home since I was discharged, but that’s no longer an option. So, I’m taking a little time off from work to wrap up the recovery process. While I’m off, for the next four weeks, I’ll be working on the new book. Today starts my #30DaysOfWriting for MonoGame: Code...

Initial Post
June 6, 2015

The redesign and relaunch of Codetopia.com is pretty much complete. My main goals were to: Announce the suspension of my contracting work. Announce my new job. Announce the publication of my new pun book. Update the Camps section of the site. Get ready for the 2015 camp! – Joe
